To diet or not to diet

Worried about weigt gain, here's good news !

A 20 year study on how heart disease develops in adults, presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association, showed that quitting cigarettes will not affect your long term weight gain. The research found that people who had stopped smoking had initially gained weight, however this was only temporary. Over the twenty year period, starter groups and stopper groups were populated by people bouncing back and forth from weight gain and loss, indicating that smoking status had little effect on body weight.

Elliott M. Antman, MD, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says this information is useful in counseling patients.

"Now I can turn to patients and say, 'Look, we have long-term data showing that is not the case. Smoking status has limited impact on body weight, so concerns about weight gain should not be used as an argument against cessation of smoking,'" Antman says.

Common Myths About Water

1) Using a water treatment device or filter will make tap water healthier.
Thousands of people use home water filters to improve the smell, taste, or appearance of their tap water, but it does not necessarily make the water healthier or safer. Unless you have a well with contaminated water, the water that comes out of your kitchen sink is as nutritious as water gets.

2) Eight glasses a day is the right amount of water for everyone.
The amount of water you should drink depends on your size, activity level, and age in addition to other factors such as your diet and stress level. A 100 lb female living in a temperature-controlled environment will obviously not require as much water as a 215 lb male doing vigorous physical activity in 100 degree whether.

3) Drinking water can never cause health problems.
If you drink too much water you can suffer from water poisoning, which can even result in death. Last year, there was a widely reported incident where a Sacramento, CA resident died after drinking mass amounts of water for a radio competition.

4) There are no federal restrictions on bottled water.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under federal law, companies must test bottled water for the same 80-some contaminants as municipal water.

5) If you don’t like water just drink soda.
Water is by far the best hydration fluid. Soda does not even compare. An 8-ounce sugar-based cola has about 95 calories. The sugar in soda will even rot your teeth. Regardless, rinsing your mouth with a glass of water after any sugary drink can actually help protect against cavities.

6) Drinking water before a meal can help you lose weight.
The water you drink before or during a meal won't keep you from overeating. The only way water will help you feel full is if the water is found in foods like fruits and vegetables.

DON'T FORGET THE GOLDEN RULES WHEN CONSIDERING DIET
