Instant Relaxation & Sanctuary

This exercise will help you to relax in a very short space of time. It is followed immediately by a visit to your sanctuary.

During the course of this exercise I shall ask you at one point to put the first finger and thumb of each hand together. I want you to associate this action with the relaxed state you are in. With practice this simple action will come to elicit instantaneous relaxation in the same way that a word can come to elicit a picture in the mind.

Exercise No. 1 - Instant Relaxation & Your Sanctuary *mp3

I want you to imagine that you are with a friend or partner. I want you to imagine talking to your companion and telling him/her how you felt during and after the relaxation exercise. After this "rehearsal" perhaps you will have the courage to share your experience with your fellow quitters in the chat room.

"Anchoring" is a form of conditioning. The psychologist Pavlov conditioned dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell; he did this by ringing a bell every time they were given food. Subsequently, the dogs salivated every time the bell rang, even if the food was not present.

In the relaxation exercise, while you are in your private sanctuary, I ask you to put the first finger and thumb of each hand together. This action is an "anchor" which you will perform every time you are in your sanctuary and in a state of relaxation. After some practice, you will automatically feel relaxed every time you put your fingers and thumbs together in this way.
