The Internal Representation of a Pleasant Experience

Relax. Put together your first finger and thumb of both hands as you did in the Inner Sanctuary exercise. Recall the feeling of being in your sanctuary; warm, safe, at peace.

I would like you to think of a very pleasant memory. It can be a recent one, or one from the distant past. Visualise it. You can keep your eyes open or close them, whichever works best for you. Simply relax and visualise a pleasant memory.

Now you have a pleasant image on your internal movie screen. I want you now to make that image brighter and brighter. It's as if bright lights are going on to enhance the scene. As the image brightens, be aware of how your internal state changes - how you feel about the image; the memory.

Next, I want you to bring your mental picture closer to you. Now stop and make it bigger.

Okay. Now you can open your eyes again. It's the end of the exercise.

What happens when you manipulate the image? It changes the intensity of the experience, doesn't it?

For the vast majority of people, making an already pleasant memory bigger and brighter and closer creates an even more powerful image and more a more pleasant one. It increases the power and pleasure of the internal representation. It puts you in a much more powerful, more joyous state.

The sounds and images we experience internally are what we call reality.

Each of us experiences reality in a different way.
