Your Past Self
Your
Past Self exercise was the way I personally managed to kick my smoking habit.
I devised this exercise all by myself long before I learnt about Neuro Linguistic
Programming (NLP) . One of the reasons I have faith in the NLP technology is because
I came up with a similar idea myself at about the same time and it worked for
me.
One day, out of the blue, my smoking self had the realisation that
I had had a life before smoking. That for by far the largest portion of my life
I had not smoked and in fact had despised the habit. It struck me that if I could
live perfectly happily in the past without cigarettes, I could get back to that
state again.
I recalled a day in childhood when I was skipping on the pavement
outside my grandmother's house. I remembered the day was fresh and my cheeks were
stinging a little from the chill. I remembered how light I felt as I jumped over
every turn of the skipping rope. I remembered the feeling of energy and delight.
I remembered the sound my shoes made as they touched the ground. I remembered
being warm internally and the cosiness of my warm cardigan. I was really happy.
And SMOKE FREE.

After that realisation, every time I
thought about having a cigarette I would recall that memory of the skipping girl.
I knew that more than wanting the next cigarette, I wanted to get back to the
God given state of being smoke free and happy. And I did.
