Nicotine acts on receptors in the brain and, when in contact
with these receptors, cause a release of dopamine in the
brain that encourages the smoker to repeat the action.
By using NLP, we can change this "bad habit"
into a positive "good habit", replacing the dopamine
short term rush, with a natural longer lasting feel good
sensation. In short training the brain to switch habits.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) was first devised by
Richard Bandler and John Gringer; Frogs into Princes et
al. Later Anthony Robbins made it commercially popular with
his book Unlimited Power. A plethora of books on NLP now
exist and can be easily researched on Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com.
NLP "allows you to know how a person is internally
representing his external world. The person's internal representation
of the external world is his 'map' of reality and each person's
map is unique." (Anthony Robins; Unlimited Power).
It is a very powerful tool which can identify functional
subjective experience and metaphorically graft it into the
mind of a recipient, overriding a more dysfunctional expression.
To give you a concrete example, NLP has studied the internal
strategies of good spellers and bad spellers. Bad spellers
were found to spell phonetically; good spellers were found
to see a visualisation of the word and at the same time
experience a pleasant feeling. When bad spellers were taught
this strategy their performance improved.
NLP uses certain jargon words to describe the internal
experiences of human beings. I shall be talking about "sub-modalities";
Anthony Robins, in the glossary of his book Unlimited Power,
describes "sub-modalities" as "the sub-classifications
of external experience: a picture has brightness, distance,
depth. Sounds have volume, location, tone, and so forth."
"Modalities" would include sight, sound, bodily
sensations, touch and taste.
